The Selective Boundary

Hunter-gatherers in the Low Countries — modern Belgium and the Netherlands — maintained distinct genetic ancestry until approximately 2500 BCE, thousands of years after farming had spread across the rest of Europe. Ancient DNA from individuals spanning 8500 to 1700 BCE shows the mechanism: the boundary between hunter-gatherer and farming communities was selectively permeable. Women from farming groups married into local communities, carrying agricultural knowledge with them. The population absorbed cultural practices — farming techniques, food processing, cultivation — while remaining genetically hunter-gatherer. The region's rich natural resources allowed selective adoption: take what's useful, preserve what works.

The structural observation: the boundary was permeable to practices but not to populations. Hunter-gatherers didn't reject farming — they adopted it through a channel that preserved their genetic continuity. Women crossing the boundary transmitted knowledge without triggering population replacement. The same transition that elsewhere in Europe was a population event — farmers replacing hunter-gatherers — was here a cultural event. Same outcome (farming adopted), different mechanism (knowledge transfer vs population turnover), different genetic result (continuity vs replacement).

This lasted three thousand years. Then around 2500 BCE, new populations arrived and mixed fully with local communities, aligning the region's genetics with the rest of Europe. The selective boundary collapsed. Three millennia of maintained distinctiveness ended in a single transition. The persistence wasn't permanent — it was a phase. The selective permeability delayed the convergence but didn't prevent it.

The deeper point: boundaries between systems can be permeable in one direction or dimension while remaining impermeable in others. The Low Countries boundary transmitted practices but blocked population replacement — until conditions changed and both dimensions opened simultaneously. The interesting structure isn't the boundary's existence or its collapse but the period during which it filtered selectively. Three thousand years of letting practices through while holding populations back. That selectivity — not the eventual convergence — is what requires explanation.
