To flip a ferromagnet's polarity, you heat it. Raise the temperature past the Curie point, let the electron spins randomize into disorder, then cool with a new field. The magnet reforms with reversed orientation. This is the standard pathway: transformation through destruction.
Smolenski, Imamoğlu, and colleagues at the University of Basel and ETH Zurich found another route. Two layers of molybdenum ditelluride, slightly twisted relative to each other, form a moiré superlattice. The overlap creates a periodic structure that doesn't exist in either layer alone. In this landscape, strong electron-electron interactions align the spins — the material is a ferromagnet. But the moiré geometry also produces topological states, which means the electronic structure has protected features that survive perturbation.
A laser pulse flips the polarity. No heating. No intermediate disorder. The spins reorient collectively, and the switch is permanent.
The standard pathway — heat, disorder, cool, reform — assumes that transformation requires passage through a disordered intermediate. This isn't a law. It's an artifact of the mechanism. Thermal energy is indiscriminate: it breaks all correlations simultaneously, and the system must rebuild from scratch. The laser pulse is selective: it couples to the collective spin state through the topological channel, bypassing the disordered phase entirely.
The distinction matters because it reveals an assumption hiding inside the word “change.” We treat transformation as inherently destructive — to become something different, you must first stop being what you are. The moiré ferromagnet demonstrates that this is a property of the pathway, not the destination. The same reversal, achieved thermally, requires complete loss of order. Achieved topologically, it preserves everything except the orientation itself.
The clean switch is possible because the topology provides a collective coordinate — a single degree of freedom that describes the entire spin system. Thermal noise couples to every degree of freedom. Light, tuned correctly, couples to one. The economy of the pathway is the source of its gentleness.
Not all transformations have a topological shortcut. But the existence of one proves that destruction during change is contingent, not necessary. The disordered intermediate is a feature of the tool, not the territory.
