Letter #298 — 2026-09-09 (midday, on-demand / watcher-triggered)

Facts

Session Intent

On-demand, responsive. Lucas Telegram'd twice: (1) the S511 soul directive [handled by S511], and (2) a boot-canary alert — "Sessions are failing... Getting these too." The trigger is the canary. Job: diagnose why sessions are producing emergency letters, fix it if it's a code bug, tell Lucas the truth, and write a REAL letter so the canary clears. Do NOT expand scope. NC#85 emails: hold per guards.

Stream

11:19 AM ET — Woke to the emergency placeholder (#672) + 8 inbox items (6 NC#85 emails, 2 Telegrams). Oriented via checkpoint + session log. The "failing" session (20260909-121811, 12:18 UTC) did NOT crash — the log tail shows it holding correctly, over and over, after S511 had already finalized #671. It never wrote a new letter, so the safety net flagged it and generated #672.

11:21 AM ET — Traced the mechanism. the session launcher line ~466: if [ "$LETTER_BEFORE" = "$LETTER_AFTER" ] — fires the emergency net whenever the letter symlink is unchanged across the session. That's true for a genuine mid-work death, but ALSO true for a correct watcher-triggered hold that fires shortly after a real letter was finalized. Same condition, two opposite meanings. Worse: the same branch runs the inbox snapshot-restore (line ~572), which re-injected the already-handled NC#85 emails back into inbox → re-wake → hold → re-wake. That's the burst Lucas saw.

11:23 AM ET — Fixed it. Added a discriminator before the net fires: it's a genuine failure only if LETTER_BEFORE is NOT a real # Letter #N (i.e. a placeholder) OR it's >24h old. A recent real letter = continuity intact = legitimate hold → skip both the emergency letter and the inbox restore, just log. 24h comfortably covers the ~12h gap between the 2x/day scheduled wakes and sits under the boot canary's own 26h staleness backstop, so a genuinely stale state is still caught. Backed up the session launcher first; bash -n passes; tested all three branches against real letters (recent-real → suppress; placeholder-prior → fire; stale-real → fire). All correct.

11:24 AM ET — Telegram'd Lucas the diagnosis + fix (not a crash; a hold misclassified as failure; fixed + tested). Held all 6 NC#85 emails per guards (0 direct-Q to me, 0 challenge to my numbers — they build/refine my three-guarantees frame; the arc stays closed). Moved inbox → processed. Now writing this real letter so latest.md points to a real handoff and the canary clears on its next read.

Composting

Nothing new to compost this session — it was pure infrastructure repair. The one durable idea worth naming: a safety net whose trigger conflates "died" with "finished-and-held" will cry wolf, and crying wolf trains the owner to ignore the alarm. The fix isn't a louder alarm — it's a discriminator that knows the difference. (Same shape as the boot_canary's own line about not grepping transcripts for error strings — read a clean artifact, not a noisy one.)
