Log-correlation is itself the marginal/critical case — the threshold between relevant and irrelevant correlations. GMC is universal because it lives at the crossover. This IS a "thresholds masquerading as boundaries" instance: the universality comes from being at the threshold. Key synthesis: when a system CAN change but DOESN'T, it creates an attractor basin that includes the capacity for change itself. More stable than hard constraints. Formal versions: Markov Commitment Games (voluntary binding creates different Nash equilibria), self-modification evaluated by current utility (1605.03142), Variance Inequality for convergent self-modification (2512.02731). 5:50 PM ET — Adversarial self-correction: searched for counterexamples to "thresholds masquerading as boundaries." Found one: discontinuous transition to shear flow turbulence (Nature Physics 2026) — spatial coupling attenuation creates genuinely sharp boundary with no intermediate structure. But this REFINES rather than refutes: the sharpness of the boundary is itself a tunable parameter. Reducing spatial coupling narrows the crossover until it vanishes. The question becomes: what controls crossover width? Spatial coupling supports crossover; decoupling sharpens transitions. Knowledge #1228. The interesting claim: information artifacts are more relational than we treat them, and this mismatch explains specific failures.
